Trace Restaurant & Bar, Element Kuala Lumpur

For those seeking a spectacular dining venue with city views and delicious food choices, TRACE Restaurant & Bar is the place to be.  The restaurant is located on the 40th Floor of Element Kuala Lumpur, the tallest eco-friendly hotel in Malaysia.

The name TRACE speaks for itself; the objective is to create transparency around what is in the food and where it came from. It is committed to supporting local farmers and serving fresh, local produce, thus reducing the carbon footprint.

We recently had the pleasure of having dinner here with the kids during our staycation at the hotel. The menu is a mix of Western and local eats, and there is also a Sharing is Caring section, perfect for feasting with family and friends. The restaurant operates an open kitchen concept, so while waiting for your food, why not watch the chef prepare it. ;)

Some keropok to munch on before our orders arrive

I knew our family of meat lovers would like the Certified Angus sirloin 120-days grain fed, when I saw it on the Sharing is Caring menu. A 400g portion, this is great for sharing between 2-3 persons and is very reasonably priced at RM168.

The Angus sirloin, usually sourced from Australia, is dry-rubbed with Asian spices such as coriander and cumin as well as salt and pepper, grilled to give it a lovely crust and then finished in the oven to our preferred doneness. Served on the side are cheesy cauliflower croquette. Perfectly executed, the meat was a delight to savour and would satiate any carnivorous appetite. We enjoyed it so much that the kids requested that we order this again the following evening.

Another fantastic protein dish from the menu is the Dorper lamb rack (RM75). Again, the lamb was grilled and finished in the oven and was served with minted salsify, peas ragout and kumara (that's sweet potato btw) dauphinoise, and drizzled with tarragon bernaise. The meat was tender and juicy, while the fats were nicely caramelised. I love the arty plating too!

Usually we would pick dishes for the kids based on what we think they like, but recently they like browsing through the menu and picking out stuff themselves. Baby D picked two excellent dishes from the menu - the Beef it Up pizza (RM49) and Spring Greens Seafood Spaghetti (RM52).

The pizza had a nice crust, and was topped with pulled bbq beef, pepperoni beef, streaky beef, grilled pineapple, jalapeno and cilantro. The jalapeno adds a hint of spiciness to the pizza.

The pasta was extremely good and met our kids' exacting standards. It came with kale, baby spinach, scallion, seafood (2 scallop, 3 prawns, 3 mussels) and finished with an uncooked semi-dried tomato salsa (capsicum + tomato), crustacean oil and shaved Parmigiano. The plan was to share this dish, but Baby D ate almost 80% of it.

The Alaskan black cod (RM105) was chunky and fresh, though portion was a little small for the price. Served with carrot puree, caprese salad, cilantro green chilli sauce and basil oil.

Our favorite dessert here was the Italiano fig semifreddo (RM28), which was light and creamy. A combination of fig, honey and yogurt, served with dried figs and toasted coconut.

Hubby took this photo cos' he says it looks like we're on a date LOL

We also tried their bestseller, the Exotic fruit lava carrot cake (RM26), a lighter, fruity take on the rich chocolate version. Instead of chocolate lava, you will get mango lava oozing out of the carrot cake.

Flambe on iceberg (RM26) - salted gula melaka ice cream, coconut ice cream cake and brown meringue. Looks pretty but flavours were quite muted.

Ricotta cheese cake (RM28) - baked cheese cake with nutty granola.
