Fennel Restaurant, Inverurie, Scotland

One of the things we wanted to do with the kids while we were in Scotland was strawberry picking. We found a few addresses on the internet, and decided to drive to the location to look for the strawberry farm but we were met with disappointment as the farm has apparently closed down several years ago.

There's nothing like a good dinner to perk up our moods. We drove into Inverurie town centre after our failed strawberry-picking attempt, and we spotted Fennel Restaurant, not too far away from where we were parked. A blackboard at the front of the restaurant read "Steak Night Sunday", which sounded good to me :)

The restaurant interior is modern and welcoming. As soon as we were seated, the waiting staff brought us two menus (a la carte and kids menu) and asked if we would like to order for the kids first, so that they can start eating first. How thoughtful of them. Normally, I would order the Sunday Roast (if the restaurant does them) but the lure of half price steaks on Steak Night Sunday was just too great. They had a great selection of appetizers too, so we went ahead and ordered them too.

Both my sister-in-law and I ordered the trio of king scallops, pumpkin puree, Parma ham and pistachio crumble (£8.50). Love the presentation on a black slate and the scallops were so fresh and nicely cooked and the pairing with the Parma ham and pumpkin puree was really yummy. Brilliant start to the meal!

Hubby had the smoked venison, celeriac and apple slaw, homemade quail and black pudding scotch egg (£7.50) which was another beautifully plated dish and it tasted really delicious too. The quail egg had a soft centre encased in a crisp batter.

My brother-in-law had the Soup of the Day - carrot and coriander soup served with warm, crusty baguette. (£5.50). While the adults were enjoying their starters, the kids tucked into their main meals. The kids had roast beef (half portion), sausages, chicken goujons and chips.

Hubby and I went for the steak - Donald Russell rib eye steak for £10. What a steal! The steak was nice and juicy, and it was served with triple cooked chunky chips, grilled portobello mushroom, onion rings and a black pepper sauce. My brother and sister-in-law went for the roast of the day -sirloin of beef, served with Yorkshire pudding, roasted potatoes, roasted vegetables and red wine jus (£9.95) which looked marvellous too.

The adults were too stuffed for dessert, but the kids still had room for the sticky toffee pudding (£5.50), apple crumble (£5.50) and chocolate ice cream (£4). I tried some of the sticky toffee pudding (oh my weakness!) and it was quite good.

  2. What a shame about the strawberry picking. It's hard to find PYO places here too. Your meal looked great and Raymond Blanc as a guest is pretty fabulous!
